High Island

We left Sabine Woods and headed for High Island. High Island is situated on a salt mound. This makes it higher than all the other land around making it an excellent place for tired migrating birds to take a rest. The island is one mile in diameter surrounded by oil rigs. This is a world renowned birding destination.
After a quick stop at the post office we headed to Smith Oakes. This is one of our favorite birding destinations. There are tons of large oak trees that birds flock to and a rookery that holds hundreds of birds and nests for spoonbills, egrets and the like.
We made one loop around to the rookery and then set up camp and had dinner.
The last picture was inspiration for one of the scenes from the movie "The Big Year".
